About this deal

The performances are strong here. Obviously, Bale is the big draw. He's perfect in the part and he really commits to the role. He can turn the charm on and off but when it's time to go 'psycho' all bets are off and his Bateman can shift almost instantly from darkly humorous to clearly psychotic. He's perfect in the part and it's hard to imagine anyone else doing as good a job as he does here (Leonado DiCaprio was at one point considered). The supporting players are also very strong. All of Bateman's co-workers are just as self-absorbed as he is and the actors in question play these parts well. Chloí« Sevigny and Cara Seymour also stand out here, doing very good work in their respective parts.

American Psycho is, forgive me for calling such a young film this, a classic. It is one of those films that you either hate it or you love it, there is no in-between. Not to sound pretentious, but you need a certain level of knowledge and persistence to really watch this movie to its end to truly enjoy it despite its nuances. This is a great 1980s satire film about those who worked on Wall Street and its culture during this time. This really is a true classic and should be on every movie collector’s shelves.American Psycho comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment featuring 2160pHEVC encoded video and lossless Dolby Atmos/TrueHD 7.1 channel sound. Let me start by saying that this is a wonderfully crafted film from a cinematic perspective. It’s not an overtly bright film, although there are bright elements. The cinematography benefits from the enhanced resolution and warmer chromatic accents. The high dynamic range is subtly applied, enriching the film’s frequent use of natural lighting, which imparts an added sense of depth. Resolution is predominantly stable with only a few instances where innate softening crops up. Overall, I found the image to be sharp, especially revealing plenty of minutia during close-ups, and wide-angle shots.

In the same way Beetlejuice watches The Exorcist, American Psychojust keeps getting funnier every time I see it. As I'm closer to 40 than I was when the film first hit theaters, I have an ever-growing appreciation for its biting cultural satire, hyper-violence, and its sadistically dark sense of humor. I hadn't seen the film all the way through in almost 14 years and I was worried that the film had passed its expiration date. I'm glad to see that worry was for nothing. While many of the references may be culturally dated, the film's satire is just as biting as it ever was. If anything it may even have some more teeth if you're at all interested in dissecting modern cultural cupidity. On the way from Lionsgate on the road to Halloween, we’ve learned this morning that Mary Harron‘s American Psycho is getting a Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook 4K Ultra HD release. I'm a huge fan of the movie, we've watched American Psycho once or twice a year for many years from VHS, to DVD to blu-ray. It never gets old, always amuses, and as it grows on you the perplexing horror becomes a quite quotable and entertaining mix of character psychology and humor, in an 80's culture time capsule. The American blu-ray was never a very good transfer of the 35mm film, but the UHD absolutely destroys every other release by light years. The gains in detail are immense, and you see so much more of the film, whether it's the settings, the costume work, the hair and skin... it really brings the film to life in a new way, given how integral these elements are to the people and places in it.

Can't recommend it enough. If you're a fan of the movie it's a must see, and if you're in any way interested in movies with a bit of wit and semi-indie sensibilities, it's worth taking a chance on. American Psycho is one part horror, one part satire and two-parts character study. Leaving the audience to draw several key conclusions that may just leave you thinking about it well after its conclusion. In the end, both my wife and I found it rather entertaining. The Dolby Atmos mix uses the entire platform so as to broaden the soundstage. This includes off camera sounds and low-level ambience. The music score is mixed over the sound field, adding natural depth to its orchestrated elements while complimenting the story's thematic details. This is done to very good effect, correlating with the onscreen events quite nicely as the most minute audio cues are fully realized. The extra channel spacing helps give big scene sequences a lot of life. Anytime Bateman and his pals are in a big empty restaurant or a loud and busy club, you can really feel and appreciate the added room this mix affords. You also get a great sense of distance when that chainsaw revs its engine down the hallway. Levels are spot on without any sort of softness issues to report. As far as object-based activity, there really isn't much to speak of save for one terrific element: the narration.
